Monumento a Berto Barbarani
(San Zeno)

Berto Barbarani was an Italian poet who wrote in the Veronese dialect. He is considered one of most articulate voices of the aspirations and sufferings of the people of Verona.

The last period of Barbarani's life coincided with the traumatic conclusion of the Second World War, in which he suffered a series of devastating bereavements. First the loss of his beloved nephew, then his wife Anna Turrini. Three months later, severely weakened in body and soul, Barbarani was hospitalised after the furious aerial bombardment of 4 January 1945. He died a few days later, aged 73.

This is one of two statues of Barbarani to be found in Verona, the other being  prominently located at the junction of Piazza Erbe and Via Mazzini.
