The Dig by John Preston
My rating: 5 of 5 stars A gentle but deeply affecting read that captures the unspoken fear and uncertainty of a county on the very brink of war. The Dig by John Preston is compellingly told from four different perspectives, including that of Basil Brown, the unassuming cycling excavator behind one of the greatest ever archaeological discoveries. It has a strangely uplifting melancholy and an absolute sense of completeness, despite leaving so much unsaid. View all my reviews

Mayflies by Andrew O'Hagan
